cassette tape was sold at his concerts in 1983 but never released
commercially. Price

It's
too bad that this recording was not released officially, because it
was very well done and very interesting to listen to.

Alvin Lee Band
Featuring Mick Taylor Recorded Live in Paris, France, November 12,
1981 Tracks Included are: 1. One Of These Days
8:10 2. Pecan Pie is the listing and this version is the best
that I've heard, in fact this whole recording is nothing short of
spectacular. The sound is clear and bright and the band comes across
as simply brilliant. You can really hear all the members
contributing. 3. Good Morning Little School Girl 7:05 Again
Brilliant Performance! 4. Slow Blues In C 8:20 -- Mick
Taylor, really compliments Alvin's guitar work on this song. Alvin's
vocals are strong and clear, the keyboards are smooth and low key
giving the song a real classy sound. The song is even more enjoyable
due to the fact that it's not forced along to its conclusion, it's
rather flowing along like a long lazy river on a sunny afternoon and
therein lies the beauty of this song and the performance. 5.
Love Like A Man 8:40 This song comes out as the real sleeper
surprise on this cd. After the initial familiar riff, the band
launches into a powerful extension of the song where the entire band
is cutting loose and rocking along…to the point that you forget
that it's still Love Like A Man. In fact, a little over seven
minutes into the song the audience is really getting involved…at
7:45 the main riff is once again brought back to life and the song
winds to a relatively quick conclusion. You've never heard Alvin
sound any better than this, he's always at his best as just one of
the boys in the band and on this bootleg recording he's just that. 6.
Going Through The Door 4:15 Is another great live version of
this song-well done although no surprises here. 7. Alvin asks
the audience "How about a little rock `n´ roll to liven things
up" then he performs a little guitar scat thing for a little
over a minute and then launches into "I'm Writing You A
Letter"…this alone is a pleasant surprise as you'd be
expecting him to jump right into I'm Going Home, he doesn't and it
comes off brilliantly. The vocals are passionate and strong-powerful.
Alvin wails Mick wails and I can tell you that this version of the
song is even better than the one that originally appeared on
"In Flight". The song is 5:05 long and you've never heard
Alvin and band sound any better than this….this recording is a
must have for any Alvin Lee fan! 8. One minor glitch happens
here, due to the person who is recording this event. Alvin announces
"we're going to do a number with Tom Comton on the drums and
Fuzzy Samuels on the bass…the song never happens and from other
copies of this song that I've heard, you should know that this tune
runs 14:00 to a little over 22:00 on some recordings. So what
happens is "Sweet Little Sixteen" 4:20 hard / heart
pounding rock and roll, chomp, chomp, chomp wailing guitar marathon
of fun, fun fun! This song sounds even better than the one offered
on the end of the "Watt" album that was recorded at the
Isle Of Wight Festival in 1970. This version kicks ass all over the
place. Put on your headphones to catch every riff, guitar solo and
vocal…it's a real happy and exhilarating experience!!! 9.
Alvin says "Do you want some more? I can't hear ya, do ya want
some more? "Alright, here's a little ditty called "I'm
Going Home". The song is 17:25 long folks hang on for a musical
extravaganza that you'll never forget! Right from the get go the
audience is joining right in and singing along. Four minutes into
the song Alvin starts to "sing some blues for you" at five
minutes Alvin is howling and really getting into it. From six
minutes to 9:15 it's bop and rock bopping along, at 9:17 Alvin says
"look out baby, I'm gonna rock and roll for you"….whole
lotta shakin´ goin´on….gone, gone, gone….home to see my baby….she's
alright….I just wanna make love to you….yeah, yeah, yeah….gonna
shake you all night long….14:15 into it and this song is hot and
right on the money…..at 15:10….look out baby comin´ to get you
one more time!!! In Conclusion: If , God Forbid, Alvin Lee were to
die today, this would be the one and only recording that would stand
out above all others in my memory of what a great musician and
entertainer he was. Having heard countless versions of "I'm
Going Home" the most fan noteworthy of which is the famous
Woodstock recording, I can say in all honesty and with all due
respect to the man, that this Paris Bootleg cd is the pinnacle of
Alvin's career. Not only that but it makes the Woodstock version of
the song pale by comparison, this version is the ultimate!

drum solo by Alan Young and bass guitar by Steve Gould) a few more
tape glitches. 7. Classical Thing / Love Like A Man 4:00 (slight
tape glitches). 8. Scat Thing / Hey Joe (song cut off in the middle)
End of side 1. Side 2. 1. Hey Joe concludes, total time with

4. Help Me 8:50 (perfect recording - no glitches) 5. I'm Going Home
9:50 (with audience) good recording. 6. Choo Choo Mama 2:25 7. Rip
It Up 3:50 with audience In Conclusion: The sound is distant, hollow,
and full of echo. It's Still worth a listen, Slow Blues and Help Me
are the stand out tracks. But it does contain the whole concert,
with a dozen glitches, no problem.
Alvin Lee Band
Featuring Mick Taylor Live In Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, November 24,
1981 At the Stabler Arena, Lehigh University Tracks
Include the Following: 1. One Of These Days 4:25 (the sound quality
is dull / muddy / poor) 2. Good Morning Little School Girl 5:30 (sound
is slightly better than above) 3. Slow Blues In C-- 6:10 Mick Taylor
on Keyboards Alvin says. 4. Pecan Pie 3:40 Muffled / Poor Quality 5.
I Can't Stop Lovin´ You 7:10 (Not impressed at all, too long, too
boring. Although on the RX5 album it's a tasty piece of good music,
this version live is terrible to say the least. The recording stinks
as well so that possibly also adds to my distaste for the whole
thing. 6. Slow Down 3:45 A good song, well done but the recording
again kills it altogether. 7. Boogie Time (Jam) 6:50 good little jam
but….muffled recording. 8. I'm Going Home 9:50 with audience---run
of the mill performance and very happy that this whole cd recording
has come to an end.
The Alvin Lee
Band Featuring Mick Taylor Recorded Live In Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, December 4, 1981 1. One Of These Days 5:15
(poor quality recording) 2. Good Morning Little School Girl 6:10 (Over
Modulated Sound) 3. Slow Blues In C 7:10 well done 4. A New One
Alvin Says "I'm not going to tell you the name of it"
Honey Pie / Honey Child / Pecan Pie-your guess is as good as mine.
At the end of the song Alvin does call it "Pecan Pie". It
is a good song, just bad recording of it. 5. Can't Stop 8:40 (from
RX5) poor recording but good song in general. Still nice to hear it
performed live. 6. Slow Down 3:55 7. Boogie Now 6:55 8. I'm Going
Home 12:40 with audience-nothing special here. 9. Choo Choo Mama
4:05 with audience-well done on stage but the recording is terrible…muffled
and over modulated…but still worth a nostalgic listen once through.

Help
Me 10:15, I’m Going Home 10:35 (everything about this recording is top
notch, for a bootleg. The performance is flawless, the band is tight,
yet loose enough to have a good time. Great job on Hey Joe by Alvin and
band. The sound is slightly tinny, and you can detect some fluttering in
the recording—turn it up and you’ll never know it’s there—add
some bass and it’s perfect. Alvin never sounded better or in better
form. This recording is the perfect example of Alvin Lee at his best.
The vocals are strong and clear Alvin on harmonica is another real treat—and
if you’ve ever seen Fuzzy in action, and Tom going wild on the drum
kit, this recording is a must have for any collector or die hard fan.—I
Love This One To Death. We will have our friend Thomas make a master of
this in his recording studio. It’s that good. Only one question, where
the hell did this Alvin Lee go? This is the one we remember.
The
Alvin Lee Band Live In Chicago at Parkwest Theater, March 12, 1983
Well
we’re back to the old style Bootleg recording, with all the inherent
flaws, warts and poor sound. This cd starts off missing the start of One
Of These Days 3:25, but Alvin adds some nice little extra riffs to the
song and is once again having some fun on stage. Rock and Roll Guitar
Picker 3:15, Good Morning Little School Girl 6:05, Slow Blues In C 5:10,
Love Like A Man 5:50, a little guitar picking from Alvin 55 seconds,
Fuzzy and Tom introduction, Ain’t Nothin’ Shakin’ 14:35, a little
scat thing right into Hey Joe, 6:45, Slow Down 3:50, Help Me 10:25,
I’m Going Home 10:00, Choo Choo Mama 3:15, Sweet Little Sixteen
3:40—other than the sound quality, it’s a nice recording and happy
to have it in our collection.

This one is real, it's raw and it's good, worth tracking down, you

The
Alvin Lee Band Live In Cookstown - March 21, 1987
(On A Saturday Night)
The
sound is tinny but other than that no problem.
Set
List Includes: One Of These Days 3:55, Alvin says a brand new song for
you called Detroit Diesel (the first time I ever heard this song
performed live anywhere) 4:40, Good Morning Little School Girl 6:30,
Slow Blues In C 4:40, Rock and Roll Guitar Picker 3:25 (Alvin says Steve
Gould On Vocals) the next song is one I’ve never heard before, and
Alvin says “don’t know what it’s called but it goes like this” a
great little fast rocker, with some funky guitar work, slick vocals—it’s
a jam with vocals attached. Now to me this is the allure of bootleg cd
collecting, to come across a song like this that isn’t available any
where else. Alan Young does a great job on his drum solo in the middle
of the song 5:50, Love Like A Man 5:10 Scat Ting-Hey Joe 7:20, Slow Down
7:50, I’m Going Home 10:25, Choo Choo Mama 4:25, Rip It Up 3:00, Fuzzy
Samuel On Bass Guitar.
Ain’t Nothin’ Shakin’ 16:20

Girl 6:30 with audience 4. Slow Blues In C 4:40 5. Rock and Roll Guitar
Picker 4:00 6. I Don't Want To Be A Soldier 5:30 (with Alan Young Drum
Solo) 7. Love Like A Man 3:40 8. She's So Cute 3:50 (Alvin dedicates
this to Jasmine's birthday May 2nd) 9. Scat Thing and Hey Joe-total time
7:30 10. Slow Down and Help Me (have been excluded from this tape
recording) 11. I'm Going Home 12:30 with audience 12. Choo Choo Mama
4:15 13. Sweet Little Sixteen 4:20
In Conclusion: It is loud and raw / a
great recording and concert. Detroit Diesel-is one of the finest that
I've heard performed live. Slow Blues In C- Is so sweet and smooth, an
excellent version with some gutsy guitar work from Alvin. Rock and Roll
Guitar Picker-Excellent version of this song live, best I've heard of
this song performed live. A great bootleg tape, wonderful find, and lots
of just plain good fun.
The Alvin Lee Band Live In Esslingen, Germany On
May 7, 1987 One Of These Days 5:00 (a new song called)
Detroit Diesel 4:45 Good Morning Little School 6:05 Slow Blues In C 4:00
Rock and Roll Guitar Picker 3:00 Alan Young drum solo / with good into
on guitar by Alvin 5:00 Love Like A Man 3:00 Outside My Window (intro)
She's So Cute 2:40 Scat Thing 60 sec. Lead into Hey Joe 4:25 (end of
side one) Side Two: Slow Down 5:05 Help Me 9:10 I'm Going Home 9:40 Choo
Choo Mama 3:05 Sweet Little Sixteen 3:55 with audience Rip It Up 2:00
(Extra tracks) Nutbush City Limits 2:50 The sound quality isn't the best
but when turning the bass and treble completely off or into a flat /
neutral position it's listen able. Live versions of songs from Detroit
Diesel is a real treat, and overall a very good performance by Alvin Lee
and band. It's once again a pleasure to slip back into the past and have
a little listen to what was going on back then. It fills another little
gap in Alvin's recording time line of live concerts.

TEN YEARS AFTER – Live In Zurich, Switzerland - December 6, 1989
(From “The About Time” Tour)
Two Cassette Tapes – Four Sides
1. Rock and Roll Music To The World 5:40
The song is very weak (by the band) sounds as though it was in slow
motion, really terrible performance, but I don’t know why. Sounds as if
everyone was on a different page or pre-occupied. What a shame.
2. Let’s Shake It Up 3:55 A little better sounding but still dragging
along, so unlike Ten Years After, no energy, no passion and there
appears to be little interest between the members.
3. Good Morning Little School Girl 6:35
Much better performance and sound quality. Energy, Passion and
involvement from the band. But the real stars here are the audience
themselves. Lively bunch they are, and they love this song.
4. Slow Blues In C 5:30
This song is always performed well, with Alvin and Chick as the real
standouts. Excellent and Excellent keyboard solo by Chick as usual.
5. Hear me Calling 3:25
Excellent, but too short to suit me. Again, I don’t know why the band is
so off on this gig, but it’s obvious something is seriously wrong and
missing.
6. Hobbit (are you ready for this?) the song is only 1:40 long! Someone
did some serious editing on Ric’s drum solo. Alvin’s guitar introduction
is as long as Ric’s solo. This is also the end of side one.
Sides Two and Three:
1. Going To Chicago 4:45 Good to hear this song played live, it’s
alright.
2. Love Like A Man 5:35 Nothing special, nothing at all, just a lot of
fluff guitar work and boring as hell.
3. Saturday Night 3:40 Why Ten Years After ever did this song – in the
studio or live is beyond me. It sucks! Terrible song, shit vocals, shit
guitar work. On top of that, the volume drops drastically – which is the
only thing that stopped me from stopping the tape or fast forwarding it.
4. Bad Blood 4:40
This is a prime example of what happens when Alvin doesn’t want to do
something, he sabotage’s the whole thing, from beginning to end. The
song becomes boring, a rocking-blues number that Alvin turns into mush
and slush-too damn slow and boring. Good-Bye Alvin we really don’t hate
to see you go NOT! Go solo or go to hell for all I care, God, what shit
vocals!
5. Johnny B. Goode 1:45
For Christ sake, why bother? It’s an embarrassment, play it again Alvin
you’ll be the laughing stock of Rock `n´ Roll – although the audience
has a little fun with it – all is not lost.
6. Scat Thing / I Can’t Keep From Crying Sometimes 16:50
This version is as close to perfect as possible. If it wasn’t for
Alvin’s “Down Tuning” and “Up Tuning” and sliding the guitar against the
microphone stand, beating the strings with a drum stick….and….. never
mind…you get the idea.
7. Victim Of Circumstance 4:30 It’s usually a good song with just enough
of everything to make it sound interesting, but not this time. It has
all the flavour of Saturday Night (from About Time) or the David Cassidy
pop hit – I think I Love You. No guts, no soul no passion.
Side Four:
1. I’m Going Home 15:20 Throw in some Chuck Berry and some Eddie Cochran
(20 Flight Rock) and some Elvis (Hound Dog) and some Bill Haley (Rock
Around the Clock) riffs and the audience goes wild and loves it all.
This bootleg tape starts off slow and uninspired, but ends up on a high
note after all is said and done.
2. Choo – Choo- Mama 3:35 Good song, but shit here, no passion, and the
guitar solo doesn’t match anything anywhere it’s suppose to.
3. Rip It Up 2:40
It’s here it’s gone and so are Ten Years After with Alvin Lee. So sad to
see it happen, but this tape is the ultimate testament of a band running
on empty. Sad to say, sad to see and even worse to listen to.
As for sound quality:
It’s a fair to good recording, (as before) – just turn the bass and
treble off and it’s passable.

good concert. Set List Includes: Rock ‘n’ Roll Music To The World
5:05 Going To Chicago 4:10, Good Morning Little School Girl (sound a
little better and audience come alive and joins right in) 6:10, Slow
Blues In C (a great version of this song, real bluesy with Chick
Churchill playing some very smooth keyboards, and Alvin’s guitar work
is beautifully restrained, full of emotions and passion. The song is in
no hurry the band is enjoying every minute and so it the audience.
Having heard many versions of this song this one is my favourite, it has
the feeling of someone really sad and crying for the loss of a loved one.
Even Alvin’s guitar accents the sad moments in the song with a
sentimental awareness, unlike his usual performing the song in a
standard way. His guitar is moaning, crying and screaming the blues! The
crowd loves it! The song runs 5:55 and is a real delight brilliant! Hear
Me Calling (Alvin yells “Boogie On” and the ZZ Top sound comes out,
and so does Chick Churchill once again, as he takes centre stage solo
with the chomp-chomp in the background. 3:10, Hobbit-Ric Lee is right on
the money here, you get the impression that somehow this gig was special
and a little different. The audience is very enthusiastic and hanging on
with Ric every second. 4:35, Let’s Shake It Up---the band is right on
it, it’s Ten Years After at their best. Love Like A Man 4:00 (song
ends without audience applause) end of side 1. Side two
opens up with a poor start to Bad Blood, but other than the version of
this song performed on their video called ‘Live Legends 1990
Nottingham’ it’s the first time I’ve heard it on any bootleg. When
Alvin is milking the notes from his guitar instead of his usual
shredding it to pieces, it makes all the difference in the world, on
this recording he’s milking / caressing it for all it’s worth. Total
time for Bad Blood 7:00, Johnny B. Goode 2:00, Scat Thing / I Can’t
Keep From Crying Sometimes 14:20, Victim Of Circumstance 3:15, I’m
Going Home 7:25 end of side 2. No encores recorded.

Blues In C-Very slow and some great / outstanding keyboard work from
Chick Churchill. And, Hear Me Calling, where Alvin and band get into
their "Boogie" version of Canned Heat's "On The Road
Again" before returning once again into the "Hear Me Calling"
theme-very enjoyable.

Morning Little School Girl 5:55, Slow Blues In C 4:55, Hobbit 4:50,
I Woke Up This Morning 3:00, Hear Me Calling (Alvin says “New
Orleans Boogie”) it is a great version of the song, complete with
boogie-chomp-chomp, Alvin on harmonica, and Chick taking the
spotlight with some great piano and organ work like never before,
Ric and Leo keeping the pace throughout the entire number. The song
leads into a great version of Canned Heats classic song ‘On The
Road Again’ and then back to the finish for Hear Me Calling 5:00
worth of music. I could listen to a whole album side of this kind of
thing. What a great bootleg this is, it’s enough to get anyone
excited about Alvin Lee, Leo Lyons, Ric Lee, Chick Churchill—the
whole set is beyond words. The tape starts off very ragged but side
one ends up brilliant!!! Side 2 opens with Love Like A Man 5:50,
Victim Of Circumstance 4:30 (nice and clear and loud with the
audience joining in with hoots and hollers really getting into it.
This is the best live version I’ve ever heard. I just had to look
at the date of this recording yep, 1990 it has all the power, energy
and passion of a 1972-1973 Ten Years After—hot damn excitement!!!)
Johnny B. Goode 2:00, Scat Thing / I Can’t Keep From Crying with a
little Jimi Hendrix thrown in which gets the crowd clapping and
yelling, then right into Smoke On The Water, and then Sunshine Of
Your Love, and then Good Morning Little School Girl, and then Love
Like A Man riffs, and finally it slides like great sex, right into I
Can’t Keep From Crying Sometimes. (God Almighty-F-ing-Fantastic
Performance Ten Years After!!!) 9:45, I’m Going Home with audience
participation at full force, sounding like happy dogs at a beer
blast, orgy . The song itself is 7:00 of blistering good time.
Enter-Choo Choo Mama (A Hard Rocking 2:10 of Kick- Ass Rock ‘n’
Roll) this folks is what Rock ‘n’ Roll and Ten Years After is
all about…having a good time, enjoying life, being with friends
and family, rocking stress and frustration right out of your system.
Side 2 ends with Sweet Little Sixteen, loud, clean, clear-hot and
sweaty. The audience is just as important during this recording as
the band themselves. After the audience use the old Woodstock chant,
just before Santana hits the stage (on the Woodstock soundtrack)
Alvin Lee Band in the 1990's
Switzerland Set List Includes the following: 1. Keep On
Rockin' 5:15 (sound drops in the middle of the song after a great
start). 2. Long Legs 8:25 (starts off strong but sound level drops
off,--tape glitches also becomes muffled). 3. I Hear You Knockin'
4:00 (strong start, good backing vocals, good guitar work by Alvin,
over modulated in places but still a very good raw recording) 4.
Hear Me Callin' 5:10 (starts off slow then jumps gears and seems and
sounds very erratic) Alvin's guitar work is boring me, the same
progression as always, nothing new or interesting here, a lot of
useless fluff throughout. (the worst part is, this song has no flaws
or glitches in the recording). 5. Good Morning Little School Girl
6:30 (sound drops off at the ending) 6. Slow Blues In C 5:35 (Alan
Young on drums) (song starts off very strong, good vocal, keyboards,
bass is plain. Alvin is in great form As he's holding the notes and
not pushing the song or the band along. Excellent keyboard work,
jazzy sounding and smooth .. now a touch of Johnny Johnson thrown
in. Alvin wails right along, the band is in perfect balance and the
performance is excellent, the recording is also perfect on this song,
a real keeper for sure. Perfect in every way…exciting!!! Scott
Grant on Keyboards. 7. I Don't Give A Damn 3:40 (the background
vocals are terrible) other than that, the song is alright, not one
of my favourites to begin with, so the vocals can't really hurt
anything. 8. Johnny B. Goode (audience sing along) 1:55 (hate the
way Alvin tries to pull this one off, just as bad as Suzi Q. on the
Live at Reading recording from 1983). 9. Love Like A Man 4:20 (once
again the background vocals make this song sound just like Walk Like
A Man as performed by Grand Funk Railroad…Walk Like A Man .. Love
Like A Man.. no difference-what a shit job and embarrassment to the
original version, so pathetic! End of side one. 10. Victim Of
Circumstance 5:10 (wow and flutter, sound drops out all the way
through, good performance other than the overwhelming keyboard work.
11. Scat Thing / Riffs Galore Intro / Hendrix / Sunshine of Your
Love / Cat Squirrel / Smoke on the Water / 3:30 leads right Into 12.
Help Me, total running time: 11:40 Comments: this is the very best
that I've ever heard Alvin and the Alvin Lee Band sound. Almost
12:00 of solid work, guitar and vocals alike. The recording is close
to perfect, for a bootleg it is perfect. We will clean this up and
add it to our alvinlee.de site, maybe to play while you're browsing
our Boot-Leg Page. 13. I'm Going Home 10:00 with audience (good
recording and even impressed with the way the song comes to it's
conclusion….except for the keyboard work it's exceptionally good).
1. Choo Choo Mama 2:50 with audience (Ten Years After version is so
much better, this band is slowing Alvin down to a crawl, this
version needs to be cranked up to 45 RPM…as it's running somewhere
between 22 and 29 and way out of sync.….it's a prime lesson on how
to freak up a great song…piece of crap they have made here! ) 2.
Rip It Up 2:35 (let's rip through this number and get the hell out
of here, is my impression, because now the band is at 78 RPM for a
33 and a third recording, well you can't win them all.) Conclusion:
Great overall performance, worth searching out even with its
inherent flaws with all the warts and bumps. Tracks 11-12-13 make it
all worth while.

of Interest: "Hear Me Calling" has a great and wonderful keyboard solo
from Chick Churchill. It is very unique, beautiful, and interesting.
His solo was perfect and enjoyable. "Sweet Little Sixteen"
-excellent
version and different from many others I've heard. Real Rock and
Roll, with excellent rhythm and lead guitar work from Alvin. The
band sounds just great all the way through.

13. Choo-Choo-Mama 3:25 “with a little “Lucile” thrown in for good
measure
14. Rip It Up 2:20
In Conclusion:
The sound quality is excellent considering it is an audience
recording. There are many glitches included, and someone keeps
kicking – or was it bumping / stumbling into the microphone.
Makes no difference, as it’s another bootleg that attempts to
capture Ten Years After Live on stage and as it happened on that
night. 1991 “Open Air” must hold some nice memories in this
soundtrack. TYA sounded great, Alvin was in good form, and the band
was right on the money / on top of the music as always. Special note
is Chick’s playing on Slow Blues In C – fantastic job – very well
done.

Calling Boogie (great keyboard work by Chick Churchill) Alvin sings
"On The Road Again" with a John Lee Hooker "How How
How" thrown in, as Alvin plays some harmonica, leading right
back into the main Hear Me Calling theme. 4:35 Best song so far.
Nice and laid back, good recording, volume is a little on the weak
side. Side Two: 1. Johnny B. Goode (audience sing along) 3:10 2.
Scat Thing more jazzy than classical this time, (slight glitch)

Rip It Up 3:35 The songs were great, Alvin was in a good mood and in
rare form, and the band was right on the money this night. If
someone out there has a copy of this event from the soundboard it
would be perfect. On this copy it's over modulated and that the only
complaint I have…but it's a bootleg folks and we deal with it as
such. It was a real pleasure to listen to this recording a nice find
and I'm happy for Alvin and the audience on this one….a top shelf
performance…Alvin at his best.
The Alvin Lee Band Live In
Switzerland, October 1992 Song List Includes the
following: 1. Little Bit Of Love 5:10 2. Wake Up Mama 3:45
3. Slow
Blues In C 5:25 (excellent performance from Alvin and Band 100%
perfect) the best song so far on this cassette tape. 4. Remember Me
(strong start good vocals, band sounds tight-strong performance all
the way through 4:00 ) 5. Love Like A Man 4:05 (strong recording,
very good keyboard work, very good performance-interesting drum work
with the clatter of the cymbal very distinct and lively all through
the lead guitar solo section-song ends perfectly) 6. It Don't Come
Easy 2:55 (another track from the ZOOM album) once again very well
done with great keyboard work taking the forefront in the middle
coda- strong all the way through perfect performance-impressive). 7.
Good Morning Little School Girl 5:10 (once again it starts off
strong and solid, good vocals by Alvin…tasty keyboard work adding
to the mixture- slick drum work-Alvin does an exceptional job on the
lead guitar work-and hats off to the rest of the band for their
support. Overall one of the most interesting versions of the song
that I've had the pleasure to hear, for some reason all the
components are focused in the same direction and pushing each other
along happily-song is again perfect and very enjoyable). One minor
glitch in the middle that means very little. 8. She's So Cute 3:25 (same
great performance as above numbers-but Alvin is showing signs of
being even more involved in the concert and is himself having fun.
Alan Young on the drum kit, you can't imagine just how great this
recording and performance sound. 9. Real Life Blues 3:15 ( I don't
think that I can recall ever hearing this song performed live, it's
a another real pleasure to hear it played in front of an audience.
At the start you can hear the chatter of the audience, as they're a
lively bunch-a real rock and roll group). End Of Side One.
Side Two: 1. Johnny B. Goode 3:00 (Audience sing along) pretty weak / lame to
begin with until Alvin and Band open up and add some punch to the
song, but just as it starts taking off the song ends. 2. Jenny Jenny
5:10 (Good God Almighty, it sounds so much better without Clearance
Clemmons screeching / obnoxious saxophone work, it's more rock and
roll with out all the previous distraction involved. The keyboard
and bass contribution is so much more welcomed, and required to hold
the whole thing together. Great song, best performance I've ever
heard from Alvin in many years. 3. Help Me 8:30 (you have to ask
yourself, is this song better played as it was on the very first Ten
Years After Album, with Alvin in control and his guitar work and
vocals at the centre of attention, or in this case with more band
involvement pushing the song forward with a higher range of energy?
The trade off is, exchanging gut level passion, for energy and a
more polished performance. There is no right answer, as I like both
versions…and if you throw in the original Sonny Boy Williamson
version, they're all very different and distinct. 4. I'm Going Home
9:50 (again the band is right on the money, Alvin sounds fresh and
as we remember him to be from past performances many years previous.
Slick smooth guitar work, interesting-he's setting the pace and not
rushing the tempo as though racing for the finish line. Strong
vocals, with the band right with him on every change. Now into Hound
Dog and the guitar solo that follows, the audience is there in full
force as Alvin sings, Be Bop A Lula and again some smooth guitar
work .. Rock Around The Clock .. Alvin is belting out some old time
familiar Rock and Roll. Coming to get you one more time….Yeah, way
to go Alvin….everyone's rocking including the band….a good time,
perfect version of the song….perfect recording 100% excellent,
excellent, excellent!!! Steve Gould on Bass, Alan Young Drums, Steve
Bryson on Keyboards 5. Choo Choo Mama 2:50 6. Sweet Little Sixteen
3:00 with audience (strong rhythm section, the band is solid and
rocking, the chomp chomp chomp of Chuck Berry's Riff….the band
could've been a little faster, to keep up with Alvin's excellent
guitar work, but overall very well done). 7. Rip It Up (third encore)
starts off good but somewhere it looses the quality. Alvin is good,
the drums are alright, bass solid. It's not until the end of the
song that I found out that it's the funky keyboard effects that
ruined the song…but it makes no never mind at this point anyways.
In conclusion: Alvin Lee and Band never sounded better, worth
searching out and transfer to cd format. The first two songs have a
problem getting up to the proper recording levels and speed, once
that is resolved it's a stellar performance. A perfect ten on
anyone's scale or requirements for good rocking, and soulful blues.

Conclusion:
Alvin never sounded better, he sounds high and happy. Great
performance, great recording of the whole event. No complaints in
this area. Alvin is spectacular! The real complaint is with the
shitty drum solo, the background vocals, and the damn cheesy
keyboard work, that is meant for a roller skating rink and not for a
rock and roll show. This is what happens when musicians are working
for wages, what you get for your money is uninspired players that
sound like shit as they go through the motions. Tink Tink drumming,
blah blah bass work and rink-e-dink keyboards work. In short: It
seems that, as long as Alvin was happy, the rest of the band was
willing to just coast in sheer monotony and without an ounce of real
passion or desire.

Alvin and band. 3. Johnny B. Goode (another sing along song) 2:00

the whole set was recorded and is in fact all represented here. The real
shame is that their whole Woodstock set from 1969 is yet to be made

The Alvin Lee Band Live at Burg
Herzberg Festival, Germany,
July 20, 2001
Setlist features the following:
- Good
Morning Little School Girl 6:55
- Take
It Easy 11:50 (Complete with bass and drum solo)
- Everybody
Gets The Blues 6:10 (Slow Blues In C)
- I
Don’t Give A Damn 5:40
- Alvin’s
Intermezzo (improvisation) 1:35 (A Little Spanish Ditty)
- Love
Like A Man 5:35
- I’m
Going Home 15:20
- Choo-Choo-Mama
3:05
- Rock
‘n’ Roll-(Rip It Up) 3:10
This is an audience recording of good quality.
Alvin wasn’t playing much
in 2001 so it makes this recording that much more valuable. He’s in
good form and sounding like he’s having a good time, he sounds relaxed.
Also on stage are Steve Gould on bass and vocals
and Alan Young on drums.
Track one fades into the song that’s already in
progress, Track two is an elongated trip into boredom. Track three is a
wonderful version of Slow Blues and the pace is different, more tasteful
and happy sounding, the same applies to Choo-Choo-Mama is even slower
than usual with a little twist towards the ending, but Alvin’s guitar
work is simply tasty and almost edible a real joy.
Alvin’s little Spanish ditty is a refreshing
break before Love Like A Man. Even the intro to I’m Going Home is done
with snippets of Sun Shine Of Your Love, a Little Hendrix Voodoo Chile
and Smoke On The Water to set the rock and boogie pace. The sound here
(of the cassette tape chances tone and goes from clear to a little
muffled, typical bootleg product but doesn’t change Alvin’s
performance one iota). From the beginning of the song until the ten
minute mark the song is a throwaway (Alvin Lee Plays Alvin Lee Licks-so
what else is new) I was ready to skip the rest of the predictable song
… then for the next three minutes Alvin threw in some guitar changes
and little rock and blues riffs that
made the song come alive and much more interesting.

In Conclusion:
Great Performance and great recording, and a good look back to see
just how Ten Years After "NOW" were developing their new
songs, and the progression that was taking place. While the song
"She Keeps Moving" has changed and never made the final
cut onto their new cd and the same with "She Keeps Walking Away"
and also with "Angry Voices" the bands overall sound and
talent shine.

4:15

8. Getting Nowhere Fast 3:30
9. I Don't Give A Damn 5:05
10. Little Spanish Guitar Playing 1:00 (cut off) then continues
11. I'm Gonna´Make It 6:10
12. Slow Blues In C 5:50 (song cut at the beginning)
13. Little Scat Thing (cut off then continues into) Love Like A Man
9:10
14. I'm Going Home 11:05 (Song is perfectly intact, no glitches at
all, excellent recording by Russ Morgan and performance by Alvin and
Band)
15. Rip It Up 2:50 (song is again intact, in perfect condition)
16. Whole Lotta´ Shakin´ Goin´On 4:15 (with Tony McPhee, Edger
Winter and Band) with Alvin leading the procession…the slide
guitar work is annoying / obnoxious .. but once again the song is
cut in two pieces on the cd, so that was a saving grace. I would
think that performed live - standing in front of the stage would
have been much more enjoyable than the audio version of this song
comes across.
And where's the encores??? What a rip off!!! People were asking
for Choo - Choo - Mama but it never presented itself on this
recording…and if Rip It Up and Whole Lotta Shakin were the encores,
that's even more disappointing, as they were part of the show and
not presented as additional numbers…or bonus material.
In Conclusion:
Nice performance in general, good recording and Alvin is in good
form. Good form for Alvin these days means going through the motions,
playing good guitar, and being a very good entertainer. I call it
ZIP / RIP / OFF he couldn't rip through the material much faster,
move on to the next song or have less passion while doing it. ZIP
through the songs - Rest In Peace as the performance is as good as
dead - and get OFF the stage as fast as possible - take the money
and run syndrome.
If this is the best that Alvin can offer, it's a real pity that he
attempts to perform at all, because he puts no effort into it. He
comes across as a "Musician Prostitute" he'll lay it down
for the money, but there's no heart, soul, passion or emotion
involved here.
In short, you're getting screwed but you aren't even getting kissed!!!

Edgar Winter on saxophone) Johnny B. Goode -Bye Bye Bye 7:40 A good
audience recording that's even better if you like echo in your live
music, because it's got a highly tinny sound with not much bottom to it,
but all in all a good representation of Alvin Lee in concert in 2004.
The down side is, it's all been heard before and most of us expect a lot
more from someone who started out with so much talent.

3. I’m Going Home (a few major glitches) but it just doesn’t matter, as
this version offers nothing new or of any special interest. Run of the
mill boredom at best.
Hats off to this bootlegger, he does a readers digest version of this
whole song – it probably ran about twelve minutes but was thankfully /
mercifully condensed to a mere 7:15
4. Choo-Choo-Mama 3:50 (with audience)
5. Rip It Up 3:40 with audience (glitch / unfortunate) good song / going
well - Oh Well – It Happens)
In Conclusion:
Great Recording, very well done (under battle conditions)
With that being said, one can only hope and pray that Mr. Lee will only
continue to do very scarce performances as has been his M/O for the last
five years. Can he play guitar, of course, can he be amusing on stage
for an hour and a half, no doubt, but is he worth the $15,000 Euro he
now demands for a single gig?
Opinions very, but between myself and the person who made this recording
– Alvin should have stayed in Spain. Ten Years After with Joe Gooch is a
far better investment, and much better night out.
Alvin painting and doing his flamingo fandango on a tight rope while
studying other Ring-Ling-Brothers acts, seems to be the right vocation
for him.
My advice to Alvin, take the alleged $500.000 that you were offered for
your Gibson ES335, with the peace sticker and all…and paint quietly
until death.

I
can say in all honesty that this band is the only and the best Ten Years
After cover band out there. No one else has the guts, the balls or the
dedication and desire to pay tribute to the original band members as
these three qualified / professional musicians are doing at every gig
they play. If you get the chance give them a listen and show your
support as we ourselves do.
